Ground Zero Imam: US Worse Than al Qaeda

The Islamic cleric who wants to build a mosque two blocks from Ground Zero once claimed in a jaw-dropping speech that the United States has killed more innocent civilians than al Qaeda.

Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf’s remarks five years ago have set off a fresh firestorm of controversy, dumping fuel on the already combustible debate surrounding the estimated $100 million Islamic cultural center, and infuriating mosque opponents, who are fighting to have it moved far from the site of the 9/11 attacks.

“We tend to forget, in the West, that the United States has more Muslim blood on its hands than al Qaeda has on its hands of innocent non-Muslims,” Rauf said in 2005.

“You may remember that the US-led sanctions against Iraq led to the death of over half a million Iraqi children. This has been documented by the United Nations.”

Rauf — who made the incendiary comments in a speech about Islam in Adelaide, Australia — said that even former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, whom he called a “friend,” condoned the civilian deaths as “worth it.”

“What complicates the discussion, intra-Islamically, is the fact that the West has not been cognizant and has not addressed the issue of its own contribution to much injustice in the Arab and Muslim world,” he said. “It’s a difficult subject to discuss with Western audiences, but it’s one that must be pointed out and must be raised.”

In the same speech, Rauf used the n-word, according to an audio of the event posted on the Web site AtlasShrugs.

Speaking about how people use different criteria to judge others in a negative way, he said, “If gender is not what distinguishes us, we’ll look at skin coloring and say: n – – – – rs or whities, or whatever.”

  1. well this government doesnt care about my civil or human rights at all, i have no problem telling the truth and saying i agree. i wish i was dead here most of the time.

  2. why did YWN decide to run an article with a headline that is not true? The iman didnt say America is worse.
    Isnt truth a value?

  3. Your Sister, you’re way off base. As a simple mathematical matter, the Imam is correct: “collateral damage” has in fact killed tens of thousands of Iraqi and Afghani civilians since 2002.

On another issue, it cheapens our understanding of the Churban Europe to make such silly and inaccurate comparisons to the Nazis.

  4. Actually I am right on the money. The Nazis used the same type of disengenuous propaganda to hide their true motives and activities against the Jews. In addition, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem was in contact with Hitler. He even went incognito to inspect Auschwitz. So, I am right on the money.

Actually Sadam Hussein and the Taliban did way, way more collateral damage. But, as a Sunni himself just like they are, he will never, ever criticize them.

  5. Your Sister – Ideologues are so fatiging – “We don’t need no education” should be your rallying cry.

    As for the facts:

    1. For U.S.State Department issued reports on casualties see:

    a. “Iraq Casualties: U.S. Military Forces and Iraqi Civilians, Police, and Security Forces” http://fpc.state.gov/documents/organization/139351.pdf; and

    b. “Iraqi Civilian Deaths Estimates” http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/mideast/RS22537.pdf

    2. See also http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/11/world/middleeast/11casualties.html?pagewanted=print;

    3. And here are figures from a July 27, 2010 Brookings Institution Report:

Journalists killed – 141, 94 by murder and 47 by acts of war

Journalists killed by US Forces – 14

Iraqi Police and Soldiers Killed – 9,571

Iraqi Civilians Killed, Estimated – A UN issued report dated Sept 20, 2006 stating that Iraqi civilian casualties have been significantly under-reported. Casualties are reported at 50,000 to over 100,000, but may be much higher. Some informed estimates place Iraqi civilian casualities at over 600,000.

Iraqi Insurgents Killed, Roughly Estimated – 55,000
