Honda Issues Recall Over Ignition Switch Problems

The Honda Motor Company announced today a recall on three models.

The 2003 Accord and Civic model years and the 2003-2004 Element are being recalled to address problems with an ignition switch that could allow the key to be removed without the transmission being shifted into park – a defect that could lead to a vehicle rolling away.

This is the third recall over the problem since 2003.

The recall follows a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation into 16 complaints about the ignition mechanism, 11 of which allegedly led to rollaway crashes.

The Japanese auto giant says about 380,000 vehicles will be affected by the recall, which is expected to begin in late September.

Altogether, the three related recalls have involved about 1.4-million vehicles.
