Discount carrier Spirit Airlines is now charging for carry-on bags.

Passengers will now have to fork over $30 for a carry on bag if they pay in advance.

Those who wait to pay at the gate will be set back $45.

Any bag small enough to fit underneath a seat still flies for free, along with umbrellas, strollers and car seats.

Spirit is the first to charge for carry-on bags.

Many airlines, including Spirit, already charge for checked bags.
