The so-called “underwear bomber” apparently isn’t the only terrorist who wanted to stage a X-mas day attack in the United States last year.
Another plot targeting night clubs and restaurants in New York City was reportedly also in the works.
Sources tell CBS 2 HD there is no connection between the airplane passenger who botched an attempt to ignite a bomb in his underwear and another plot to spread terror here in New York City.
The only thing they have in common is the date, Dec. 25, 2009.
The first hint that New York City was — yet again — eyed as a terror target surfaced in an FBI report three weeks before X-mas , sources said. It warned than an unidentified extremist group wanted to strike during the holiday and was planning a test run, apparently planning to hide bomb components in a shipment of khat, a plant that is chewed like tobacco in African and Arabian nations.
“The extremists allegedly planned to smuggle unknown components of an unspecified explosive device on to a cargo flight departing Nairobi, Kenya on Dec. 4, with a final destination of London, England,” said the report written by an FBI official in London.
From there a British Muslim was supposed to get the bomb onto another flight to New York City.
According to the report the intention wasn’t to blow up a plane but to attack various targets, possibly restaurants and night clubs.
The New York contact was identified only as a Somali man identified only as “Mohammed.”
Law enforcement sources tell CBS 2 HD they are unsure how reliable the informant was and that whatever happened to the case was handled abroad.
“It washed out over there,” said one official. “We never had to scramble to deal with it here.
Authorities do worry about possible attacks from Somalia, which has attracted a number of al Qaeda groups.
