The two candidates for governor sounded off Wednesday on the controversial plan to put a mosque and Islamic cultural center just blocks from the World Trade Center site.
Republican gubernatorial hopeful Rick Lazio was flanked by a September 11th rescue worker and the sister of one of the pilots killed in the attacks.
They are calling on Lazio’s Democratic rival for the State House, New York’s Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, to investigate who exactly will fund the estimated $100 million it will take to build the multi-story community center proposed by the Cordoba House.
Opponents deny allegations of religious intolerance and say the presence of a mosque in the area puts everyone at risk.
“This is absolutely about the public safety of the people of New York,” Lazio said.
“What are we about if not religious freedom? What is this country about if not religious freedom? What is this state about if not religious freedom,” Cuomo said.
In addition to Cuomo, Mayor Michael Bloomberg has said he is in favor of the project, as is the local community board.

Must investigate where the money is coming from before it can say yes or no. Yes to religious freedom; and no to terrorism. If it is a threat if they are not allow to build than it should be also investigated, however eric holder will not do his job
A mosque at the site is a blatant reminder that the moslem terrorists brought the Twin Towers down.
Bravo Rick Lazio
This is NOT a question of Freedom of Religion. It is a question of terrorist funding. It is a widely known fact that the Imam behind this mosque building effort PUBLICLY blamed the US for bringing the 9/11 attack upon thenselves. He is part of that cadre of US-based islamic leaders who REFUSED to condemn the terrorists in the aftermath of the WTC tragedy. It is also a fact that Saudi Arabian funding provided for many mosques in the NYC area…at the impetus of extremist Wahbist religious leaders. This must be investigated and the results must be publicized.
Bravo Rick Lazio for making this an issue.
Rick Lazio was not at the rally on June 6th sponsored by Jihad Watch protesting the mosque. How shameful.
