UPDATED: Firefighters Tackle Two 5th Alarm Fires In Heavy Queens Heat


Amid severe heat and humidity, firefighters are now battling a five-alarm fire in Bayside, Queens, hours after controlling another five-alarm fire in an apartment building in Rego Park.

The fire in Bayside began shortly after 2:30 p.m. at a seven-story building at 16-66 Bell Blvd and is still ongoing.

This morning in Rego Park, a fire began around 10:20 a.m. sixth floor in a and lasted more than two hours, according to a New York City Fire Department deputy chief.

Of the more than 150 firefighters who helped put out the blaze, and 17 received minor injuries that were mostly heat-related. Queens Booth Hospital received 14 of the injured firefighters, one went to Queens Hospital and one went to Cornell with second-degree burns.

One injured firefighter refused medical attention.

The deputy chief said the firemen were rotated frequently in and out of the fire. Firefighters could be seen sitting and recovering on the streets outside the affected building.

The American Red Cross let more than 100 displaced residents into a nearby relief center for air conditioning and other supplies.

The cause of the fires are still under investigation.
