Temperatures soared into the triple digits in the city Tuesday, breaking a record and sending sweat-soaked New Yorkers scurrying for shade.
The mercury hit 102 degrees in Central Park about 2:20 p.m., shattering the record set back in 1999 by a single degree.
“It’s very hot and oppressive,” said meteorologist Joe Pollina, of the National Weather Service. “People need to take it easy today.”
By 1 p.m., the city’s 311 information line received 1,640 heat-related calls, officials said.
And Con Ed workers were frantically trying to address power outages citywide. By 2:30 p.m. there were more than 2,000 customers in Staten Island and more than 160 in Queens without power.
