The New York City Police Department is stepping up its overnight patrols in parts of Brooklyn and the Bronx.
The department is increasing its police presence because of a recent spike in deadly street violence in the two boroughs.
The number of officers on the street from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. in 23 precincts could double or even triple.
Police believe high-visibility patrols could deter violence and catch criminals shortly after they act.

the last line is the key “catch criminals shortly after they act”
there is the reason to have a gun the police are there to clean up very rarely can they stop a crime its upon every individual to look out for themselves
Even if they plastered cops all over Crown Heights it wouldn’t make a difference. A young Jewish girl was accosted a few weeks ago at 5:00 PM; there was a group of police officers at the corner, & after talking to him, they let him go.
I called Shomrim, THEY called a sergeant & the next thing we heard was they were tracking down the pervert. It turned out he is a serial creep & he was arrested.
So offenses happen right under their noses & they do NOTHING. Feh! I’m not under any illusions things will change. It’s summer & the thugs are out more. Be aware of your surroundings.
The article wasn’t vbvery well written. Added police presence is to deter crime, not to catch criminals “shortly” after they act. And it is not the police to whom one should look to deter crime in one’s neighborhood, it is at one’s self to which one should look. When neighbors band together, they can take back their neighborhoods. It may take a few ballbats, a few shotguns and a lot of shomrim, but you can responsibly take back your neighborhoods and stop violent crime. All it takes is the proper attitude. When one tires enough of the neighborhood violence, one will get rid of it! Stop bellyaching and take action.
