Credit for Emanuel Deal Goes to Yishai

The way the story is being told, Aryeh Deri made great strides towards bridging the gap between the Ashkenazim and Sephardim in Emanuel, but at the end of the day, the deal was brokered by current Shas leader Eli Yishai, not Deri.

It appears that Deri’s sincere efforts which included veteran negotiator, prominent attorney Ron Caspi did not open the necessary doors, but Yishai immediately phoned Jerusalem Councilman Yossi Deutsch, who is affiliated with Slonim, who marveled at his idea. Yishai reportedly then presented his thoughts to Maran Rav Ovadia Yosef Shlita, who stated he wants the entire matter brought to a conclusion, giving Yishai his bracha, and ultimately, he did broker and agreement that ends the painful chapter and resulted in the release of the fathers and avoiding the imprisonment of the Emanuel mothers.

  1. The assumption reflected in your headline is that Deri and Yishai are rivals – but on this issue they see “eye to eye”.
For the frum Sefardim to be sucessful they need the support of the Ashkenazi hareidim (as well as of the largely Ashkenazi “dati”). Therefore both want to promote good relations between the core elements of the Shomer Shabbos community, since only if these groups unite politically would it be even remotely possible for them to take over the government (which is Shas’s goal, as opposed to the Ashkenzi hareidim who merely want patronage).
