As many as 80 children from a Queens elementary school complained of stomach pain after drinking from water fountains apparently contaminated with a chemical accidentally dumped from an air conditioning company doing work at the school Tuesday afternoon.

Around 1:30 p.m., emergency service technicians and Department of Environmental Protection agents were brought to PS 20 in Flushing after dozens of students at the school felt sick. Fountains inside the school were shut down while officials investigated.

Students reportedly felt nauseous and had stomach pain after ingesting the water. Those who felt sick were held inside the auditorium of the school as a precaution. Parents who came to pick up their kids showed frustration, telling CBS 2 they couldn’t get a straight answer as to what happened. One woman was seen in tears, worried sick herself over the problem.

“I saw so many ambulances here and kids are going in them. Some people say the kids are too sick, some people say they are OK, I don’t know what’s going on inside,” the concerned mother told CBS 2.

EMS technicians still have yet to figure out what in the water may have made the children feel ill, but some parents were given a letter explaining the problem, saying, a private contractor doing work accidentally flushed propylene glycol into the water, and that some children drank it. The letter said the propylene was not toxic.

Around 3:30 p.m., some children were put on emergency fire buses acting as ambulances, and taken to a nearby hospital.

FDNY and Department of Education officials were also on the scene investigating.

A press conference which has already been delayed twice Tuesday afternoon was scheduled to happen some time after 5 p.m.
