A Muslim police officer who wears a hijab at work says she was insulted and discriminated against by her fellow New York City officers because of her religion.
Officer Danielle Alamrani filed a federal lawsuit this week. She says one of her supervisors told her not to “detonate on patrol” and others said she was a “moving target.”
She says one of the lowest points came while working on Christmas Day 2012, when fellow officers tried to rip the hijab off her head.
The city’s law department said it was reviewing the lawsuit. The NYPD has about 900 uniformed Muslim officers. The department recently loosened its restrictions on beards for officers requesting a religious exemption. Alamrani is one of two women who wear a hijab.

As per the Koran, lying in order to obtain what you want is permitted. So, for starters, I do not accept the word of a Muslim at face value. Investigate.
Second, the current climate of political correctness makes these things into the worst crimes. I am not saying that using hurtful words to someone is okay. But the dollar value and the perception of crime is extreme, and senseless. Jews are called derogatory names all the time, and even attacked without the fanfare of “hate crime” or megabuck lawsuits.
There is freedom of speech, and people are entitled to have opinions of Muslims that are negative, just as they have of Jews or other minorities. All that is really illegal is discrimination. We live in a nation that is a melting pot of cultures, races, religious groups, etc. We need to toughen our skins, and stop making headlines about teases given to minorities. It may not be nice to say or hear unkind things, but it is not exactly World War Three.
No, it is not World War Three but for this woman it is probably a bit like winning the lottery. The NYPD will of course settle with her for an undisclosed sum as that is the PC thing to do. Sher will not need to prove anything.
Police, like soldiers, are supposed to be “tough”. They are supposed to be trained to take insults and ignore them. Part of the training to “toughen up” police and soldiers is to pick on their most vulnerable parts: Blacks are insulted for their blackness (yes, racist comments), Whites for their whiteness, Women for their gender, and Muslims and other religions for their religion.
