IDF Seeks to Get Chareidim for its ‘Shomrei Chomos’ Program


argThe IDF hopes to attract chareidi inductees to is Shomrei Chomos (Guardians of the Wall) unit which will operate in the framework of military police, stationed at holy sites such as Kever Rochel. It is reported a group of chareidim is going to be entering the program in the coming weeks.

Yisrael Hayom reports the new inductees would be trained in the Nitzanim Base and then serve as security observers at holy sites. During part of the two-week training they will learn how to serve as an at checkpoints.

The planned called for a group of 20 to become the first chareidim serving in military police. They would not serve as first tier units at the checkpoints or holy sites, permitting more scheduling flexibility towards accommodating them.

They would receive the required accommodations regarding kashrus and no contact with female personnel or Arab women. When manning a checkpoint, they would observe Arab women passing through but they would not have direct contact with them even if an alert is sounded. Officials explain there are steps that must be taken but they do not become involved an observer coming in direct contact with women. A female would be called should the need arise to come into contact with a suspect.

They would receive certification to permit them to work in the same capacity should they wish to following discharge from the IDF.
