Report On Most Infectious Hospitals In Israel


1The Health Ministry has released a report informing the public on the level of infection in hospital around Israel. Leading the infection list if Rambam Medical Center in Haifa and at the bottom is Soroka Medical Center in Beersheva.

The ministry during the past two months collected data regarding the number of infections recorded in hospital during 2015 and compared the data to international standards of the number of infections per 1,000 catheter days.

Among larger hospitals, Rambam has the most number of blood infections, 6/1,000, followed by Hadassah Ein Kerem with 4.1 to 1,000, Ichilov with 4.1, Sheba Medical Center with 3.9, and Soroka with 0.9/1,000 catheter days.

Among the moderate size hospitals, Hillel Yafeh leads with 6.6/1,000 followed by Barzilai with 5/1,000, Shaare Zedek with 4.8/1,000, Carmel with 4.1, Kaplan 3,3, Beilinson with 2.9/1000, Assaf HaRofeh with 2.3, Wolfson with 2.1, Nahariya with 1.8 and HaEmek without any.

Among small hospitals, Hadassah Mt. Scopus with 8.3/1,000 followed by Laniado with 7.5, Poriah with 5.7, Ziff with 5.3 and HaSharon with 1.3/1,000.

Not included in the report are Yosef-Tal due to the small patient load and Mayanei HaYeshua because erroneous data was sent.

In the United States, it is reported that infection in intensive care units run from 1.27 to 2.01 per 1,000 catheter days. In Canada, the number is 1.47/1,000 catheter days, considerably lower than the Israeli figures.

It is estimated that in Israel, 3,000 to 5,000 people die annually as a result of infection.

Rambam: As the largest medical center in northern Israel, we have the most difficult and serious cases, including trauma. Patients often require prolonged hospitalization and that has an impact on infection. Numerous measures have been taken of late including dividing intensive care units to create one for internal and one for surgical patients towards preventing cross-infections.

Health Minister Yaakov Litzman adds the infections in the hospital are a plague that threaten the nation’s healthcare system. We view the war against infection as an extremely high priority. The difficult facts compel us to act with intensity to curtail infection in hospital and other healthcare centers. The Health Minister is leading with drastic measures that will lead to the necessary change to curtail infection in line decisions made by the professionals.
