U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer is concerned about airlines charging passengers for the ability to use space in the overhead bin.
The New York Democrat says passengers who purchase new “basic” fares offered by United Airlines and American Airlines won’t be able to store carry-on baggage in the overhead bins. He says he worries other airlines will follow suit and that one day all passengers might have to pay extra if they want to stow a suitcase overhead.
Schumer said Sunday that all passengers should be allowed to use the overhead bins without extra charges.
The airlines argue that the new “basic” fares are simply a way to give passengers a cheaper alternative to standard fares, which come with overhead bin privileges.

The US government should of never bailed out the thieving airlines. Is this one of the many thank yous we’re getting for giving the greedy CEO’s our tax dollars?
To No. 1
Wrong industry…the Feds never “bailed out” the airlines unless you call a bankruptcy reorganization/PBGC assumption of retirement plans a “bailout”. The parties taking the hit were the unions, industry creditors including banks, leasing companies etc. The Feds have no basis to tell the airlines how to price their service offerings. They are NOT a regulated utility and the industry was deregulated 30 years ago.
So says Schumer, the pig who has never worked for an airline nor any industry that supports airlines. Ready to step in for the Little Guy who can’t take care of himself, yet will write policies or laws that will ruin sectors because he’s too sense to understand economics, or cost, or unintended consequences, or the second order effects.
My flying or not flying is a private lawful transaction between two entities, and the government has no role.
Take your unconstitutional government interference and stick it in the lower baggage claim where the sun don’t shine.
He has a point either way!!!!!!?’
Actually, for once Schumer says something I agree with! Those airlines are a monopoly and they charge you to breathe!
Mr. Schumer,
I would suggest that your energies are best utilized by focusing on some of the major problems facing this country such as the Iran Nuclear Deal, ISIS threats, getting people back to work, supporting our police and security forces, illegal immigration, etc. rather than spending your time on telling the airlines how to run their businesses.
he needs to find more important things to worry about
