Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) slammed the NYS Department of Transportation and its implementation of chaotic traffic changes Friday morning after a car collision occurred on January 11 at Avenue P and Ocean Parkway just days after the changes took effect.
One motorist was driving southbound toward Belt Parkway as the other driver was attempting to cross Avenue P eastbound toward Coney Island Avenue when the two cars collided. According to the motorists, each claimed to have a green light and the right of way.
“What a nightmare; this is a catastrophe waiting to happen,” Assemblyman Hikind said. “The NYS DOT told us that they would monitor these changes carefully, so we should hold them to their commitment. They promised us safety, but these changes have created a more dangerous Ocean Parkway.”
Hikind’s office has been inundated with complaints from other motorists, who noted the chaos and the dangers that coincide with the implemented changes. One concerned driver, in particular, described her recent experience on Avenue P and Ocean Parkway facing Coney Island Avenue, saying, “the light turned green for me to proceed at the same time the arrows in the turning lanes on Ocean Parkway were green and there were cars in both directions making the left turn. I realized what was happening and I did not move my vehicle until it was clear and safe to do so.”
Hikind added: “This is a disaster, one that has already caused an accident and more confusion than ever. Where is the State DOT in ensuring us a safer Ocean Parkway? They agreed to monitor these changes! I have been trying to explain the chaos that would ensue should these changes take effect and this is exactly what is happening. It is my hope that the State DOT will correct and reverse these disastrous changes immediately.”

There are many traffic problems that are not addressed 1.All avenue lights 15-16-17-18AV should be synchronized. So you shouldn’t have to stop for red light every block.2.Left turns should be prohibited during rush hours in order to elieviate traffic flow.3.On Ocean Parkway there should be left turn signals for those entering.Prospect Park should be open for traffic minimum during rush hours both directions.Borough Park is locked into a bottle neck.No one cares!!
People don’t know how to read traffic signals, but it’s the DOTs fault?
Maybe Hikind should stand out there and direct traffic until a solution is found.
Thank you Dov for your efforts on our behalf!
What about the fact that lights aren’t synchronized one any of the Avenues in Flatbush. It can take fifteen minutes to go from Ocean Parkway to Nostrand Avenue even in the middle of the night because you have to stop every other block for a red light…
Why is the accident of Jan 11 being blamed on the new traffic pattern? Based on what is described it could have happened the same way before Jan 1.
It’s only our fault for having all the traffic problems,
It’s time to vote out our lazy politicians like hikind (who only cares about this situation because he lives nearby…) and Greenfield, replace them with hardworking people to represent us.
Perhaps #1 and 4 would like to explain how they would synchronize lights to allow for a free flow of traffic in *both* directions of an avenue, and how that would affect synchronizing lights on the cross-avenues, like Ocean Parkway, Coney Island Avenue, Ocean, Bedford, Nostrand Avenues, etc?
Dov needs to cut another youtube promo.
Traffic lights are not synchronized on Ocean Parkway. We have to stop nearly at every intersection.Motorist are squeezed into a corner by the bicyclists.Major thorough fares are reduced to one line.Boro Park was skewered into a bottleneck.
I’m sure if we elect a Mayor who cares about traffic flow would appoint someone who can eliviate most of the problems.
