If MK Moshe Gafne can push his bill into law, operators of an electric bicycle will have to have a license, either one specifically for the bike or a drivers license. To obtain the bike license one will have to participate in a safety seminar and familiarize oneself with road signs and traffic regulations. Gafne envisions setting a price ceiling on obtaining an electric bike license at NIS 100.

His bill is Gafne’s response to the growing number of accidents and fatalities involving the electric bikes, which are becoming increasingly commonplace in Israel.

Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz feels the current laws are sufficient but there just needs to be stepped-up enforcement. He is not supporting Gafne’s bill.
