Sometimes it seems that Jewish novels these days have become “a dime a dozen,” if not in a literal, cost sense than simply by the sheer amount of them available to the Jewish consumer. Gone are the days when frustrated frum bookworms would comb their local Jewish bookstores for a new book, only to come up empty-handed and discouraged. Today, whether you fancy mystery, suspense, or a good tearjerker of a novel, you can be reading a new Jewish book every week, if you so desire!
But of course, not all novels were created equal, and of the many thrillers and fiction stories out there, some will certainly strike you as more sophisticated and skillfully written than others.
And then you read a novel like Code One, by talented author Yitzchak Goldman, and instantly you sit up straight, as the world of fiction suddenly comes alive in your head!
There is nothing flat or clichéd about Goldman’s fiction works; to the contrary, his fine writing style fairly sings; his intricate plots are so well-researched and authentic, you wonder if it they are true; his characters are so sharply defined, you’re sure you must have met them somewhere before.
Code One, while not a historical novel per se (it takes place in modern-day times), centers around the tragic event of the Massacre of York, during which the entire Jewish community of York was wiped out by anti-Semitic rioters who were fueled by Crusader fervor.
