Haifa chareidi councilmen have voted against a planned cable car because of fears the system will be operated on Shabbos. Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav was asked by Councilman Miki Alper for a guarantee that the cable cars would not operate on Shabbos, but he was unwilling to make any such commitment.
Alper explained that he heard and saw adverts for the new system, promising it would operate on Shabbos, leading to his concerns.
The new cable system is planned to connect between Mifratz Haifa (Bay) and Technion University via Har Carmel and the nearby N’vei Sha’anan neighborhood. The project would significant reduce traffic in the area of Technion University and free up parking space in the Mifratz Haifa area. the idea was first raised 15 years ago but repeatedly place on hold but Yahav hopes to push it through this time around.
The cable car would run for 4.4 kilometers at a height of 470 meters and there would be four stations. It would travel at 18 kilometers an hour and at the busiest times, cars would run 11 seconds apart. According to planners, it will be capable of transporting 1,800 commuters an hour as each car will hold ten passengers.

So people will drive their cars instead creating even more Chilul Shabbos. At least if you put the tram in you can get Arabs to do the work (There are alot of Arabs in Haifa)
