IDF Major-General Aviv Kochavi has been appointed as the new Chief of Staff, replacing Major-General Yair Golan. Homefront Commander Major-General Yoel Strick will replace Kochavi as the new Northern District Commander. The former commander of the Yehuda and Shomron Brigade, Brigadier-General Tamir Yadai was promoted to the rank of major-general and will assume command of the Homefront Command.

It is customary that during the tenure of an IDF Chief two commanders serve as deputy chief of staff, one of whom to be tapped to become the next chief of staff.

The appointment of Kochavi was part of a major round of senior appointments in the military.
