Greenfield to Host E-Waste Recycling Event in Midwood on Sunday

ewaCouncilman David G. Greenfield will hold an e-waste collection event this Sunday, October 30, at the Midwood Public Library.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m Sunday, volunteers from the Lower East Side Ecology Center will be on hand at Midwood Library to collect electronic waste. Working and non-working computers, monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards, mice, cables, TVs, VCRs, DVD players, phones, audio/visual equipment, cell phones and PDAs will all be accepted for disposal and recycling.

“To protect the environment, it is important to dispose of electronic waste in the proper manner,” Greenfield said. “And recycling electronics is not just important – it’s also state law. That’s why I’m so happy to be sponsoring this event that will help people do just that.”

Midwood Library is located at East 16th Street and Avenue J. While you’re there, feel free to enjoy the new outdoor seating plaza that Greenfield funded, or go inside and check out one of the many new books that Greenfield secured for the library. The Midwood library is now open on Sundays because Greenfield fought to make that happen for his community.

Anyone who cannot make the event will have the opportunity to dispose of their e-waste from Tuesday through Saturday at the Gowanus eWaste Warehouse, located at 469 President Street, Brooklyn NY 11215. That facility is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (with the exception of Wednesdays and Saturdays, when the facility closes at 7 p.m. and 4 p.m, respectively).

Greenfield is among the City Council’s strongest advocates for protecting the environment. Under his leadership, the Council has passed laws and funded initiatives to keep New York’s neighborhoods clean and beautiful. One of Greenfield’s most popular initiatives is NYC Cleanup, which provides funds to clean up neighborhoods all across the city. The initiative has been so successful that earlier this year Mayor de Blasio used it as a model for his own environmental program, CleaNYC.

Please note that certain electronics will not be accepted at the event. These include home appliances such as microwaves, refrigerators, air conditioners, or ionization smoke detectors/carbon monoxide detectors (those that are labeled as containing radioactive material).

For more information about the event, contact the Lower East Side Ecology Center at (212) 477-4022 or call the office of Councilman David Greenfield at (718) 853-2704.
