Israeli motorists on the road late night will be able to buy a cup of coffee for 1 NIS in many participating gas station convenience stores including Alonit, Yellow, Menta, and So Good. This is part of the program to encourage tired drivers to stop and take a break for a cup of caffeine.
The program begins on Sunday night the eve of 29 Tishrei in participating stores which represent the leading convenience stores in the nation’s gas stations. The 1 NIS cup of coffee program runs from midnight to 6:00AM.
This is part of the ongoing effort to cut the number of road deaths. Current statistics verify that about 17% of the road fatalities occur during the nighttime hours. It is hoped the inexpensive cup of coffee will encourage more motorists to stop and take a break. The petrol companies are subsidizing the 1 NIS cup of coffee.
The program was the initiative of Deputy Transportation Minister Tzipi Hotevely, who is optimistic the plan will result in more drivers taking a break and this will lead to fewer accidents and road deaths.
