The United Nations has appointed former Portugal PM Antonio Guterres as the next Secretary-General of the organization. This elicited a response containing a hint of hope from Israel, that the ongoing discrimination that exists under the current leadership may come to an end.
Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon reacted to the selection of former prime minister of Portugal Antonio Guterres as the next Secretary-General of the UN.
“I welcome the selection of Mr. Guterres and wish him the best of luck in his new position. The State of Israel hopes, and expects, that the UN under his leadership will act in the spirit of its founding principles as a fair body able to differentiate between good and evil and will end its obsession with Israel,” said Ambassador Danon. “I hope that this change in leadership will bring an end to the organization’s hostility towards the Jewish state,” he continued.
The new Secretary-General will enter office in the beginning of January and a number of organizational personnel changes are expected to follow.
“We encourage the new Secretary-General to appoint a special envoy to combat anti-Semitism, and expect the UN to accept responsibility for ensuring the return of the remains of Lt. Hadar Goldin and Oron Shaul held by Hamas terrorists,” Ambassador Danon concluded.
