VIDEO: NYPD Shoot Man Who Refuses to Surrender in Bed-Stuy

shooA man apparently trying to elude arrest was shot by police in Brooklyn Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The 36-year-old man was shot in Bedford-Stuyvesant by members of the NYPD’s Brooklyn Warrants Squad.

The plainclothes officers were attempting to arrest the man, who was in a BMW, for a previous assault.

The following statement made by NYPD Chief Terence Monahan:

At approximately 8:45 this morning four members of the Brooklyn North Warrant Squad were on Vernon Avenue, between Tompkins and Marcy Avenues in Brooklyn searching for a suspect wanted on a felonious assault charge.

The detectives observed the suspect’s vehicle parked at the curb. Two of the warrant officers approached the vehicle on foot, while the other two drove their unmarked van in front of the vehicle to prevent escape.

As one detective approached the front window of the vehicle, the wanted suspect, identified as Javon Shipman, 36 years of age, accelerated and mounted the sidewalk in the direction of the detective.

His partner, a plain-clothes police officer fired one round at the subject as he was driving forward. The vehicle struck the side wall of a building and continued to drive off towards Marcy Avenue. Warrant Squad officers pursued the suspect’s vehicle to Tompkins Avenue and Gates Avenue where Shipman was taken into custody.

He was found to be wounded by a gunshot to his left shoulder. He was transported to Methodist Hospital in stable condition.

One police officer was transported to a local hospital for observation.

A quantity of narcotics was recovered from the subject’s vehicle.

  1. More often than not, police really need to calm down. Was someone in immediate danger, here? If not, there is no need to act as they did. I respect the police, and they are clearly endangering their lives here, but why? And why risk harm to themselves and bystanders in order to capture the man? There are often other alternatives, that police are not trained to consider.

High stress situations are not safe for anyone, including bystanders. They only cause mistakes to happen. “P’ri Ha’Mehirut Charata” – The fruit of rushing, is regret.
