The incident began on when soldiers manning a checkpoint near Shechem heard screaming from a vehicle that drove off. The incident was reported to higher-ups and the decision was made to establish roadblocks and shut down the area.

This led to soldiers entering PA (Palestinian Authority) occupied Shechem and a search continued for hours fearing an Israeli had been abducted into the PA autonomous area.

Eventually, military commanders were satisfied that there was no abduction, calling off the alert and the search.
