Russia has announced a willingness to act as moderator in resumed diplomatic talks between Israel and the PA (Palestinian Authority). Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced on Friday, 20 Elul, that his country is willing to step in and play this major role towards jumpstarting negotiations between Israel and the PA.
According to the Sputnik News Agency report, Moscow expresses support for any action that will bring the sides closer together and advance peace efforts. The senior minister reportedly made his remarks from NYC while attending the United Nations General Assembly.
The report adds that Lavrov is aware “both sides don’t appear too willing” to take him up on his offer, but he hopes this will change.
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu used the UN General Assembly forum to invite Abu Mazen to address the Knesset, adding he would be willing to give an address to the PA parliament in Ramallah. Netanyahu calls for a resumption of talks without preconditions while Abu Mazen’ insist on a number of preconditions including a total cessation of all “settlement activity”.
