Orthodox Jews Looking to Relocate to Staten Island as Williamsburg Prices Soar

SIThe following is via OnlySimchas.com:

As reported NY1′s Amanda Farinacci, the Jewish community is being priced out of Williamsburg, Brooklyn and they are looking into two new neighborhoods on Staten Island.

Would-be buyers from the Jewish community are not waiting for houses to go on sale, rather they are canvassing homeowners asking if they are willing to sell.

“They’ve been a little aggressively trying to get property around here,” said one Staten Island resident.

“A guy came and knocked on her door and was asking to buy the house for like $800,000,” another noted.

They have also been posting flyers around the neighborhood.

“My name is Noah. I am looking to buy a house in Manor Heights,” one reads. “If you are interested in selling your house, please call.”

Homeowners said that Noah said he was from Williamsburg, and appeared to be part of the Hasidic Jewish community there.

Apparently MAnor Heights and Willowbrook are desirable locations as there already is an established Orthodox Jewish community.

“More than one group of people that I have met and spoken to are desperately interested in rather than going as far away as New Jersey,” said Isaac Abraham, a community activist.

Joshua Katz has been selling homes to like-minded people ever since he moved to Staten Island from Brooklyn four years ago to be able to afford a home that can accommodate a growing family.

“Slowly, it’s built up, you know one, two, three, four, and it turned into over a hundred,” Katz said.

“They’re trying to find tracks of land to build three hundred homes,” said Ron Molcho, a realtor.

Due to the fact that there is no available land for 300 homes, it would not be impossible to create the type of communities seen in Rockland County and central New Jersey.

The area is nonetheless preparing for a surge in Orthodox Jewish residents.

Current residents of the aforementioned neighborhoods are accepting the changes as it has been a diverse community for years.

Signs that show the Jewish community is growing include the borough welcoming its first kosher supermarket in Willowbrook as well as a new yeshiva which is under construction.

  1. I don’t get it — why Staten Island? $800,000?! Why not find a small place further outside and get a bunch of people to move there. I just checked Warwick, NY — large beautiful houses for $350,000, an hour and a quarter from NY. Middletown, NY — houses for $250,000, also an hour and a quarter…. Find a group of people, move there, and people will follow….. Staten Island is already a fortune…

  2. to #1-low profile for the ultra orthodox? maybe try telling that to the slum lords, the cheating businesses, and the molesters.

this is a beautiful thing that we are expanding..

  3. I moved out of NY over a year ago and settled in Memphis, TN due to soaring house prices and cost of living and we love it there. I was able to purchase a home in the high 100K range. Just a thought.

  4. #2: You’re right, but as you say, to plunk down in a totally non-Jewish neighborhood you need a bunch of people to all get together and move at once. And that means many families, in one shot, needing to simultaneously find homes within walking distance of a central location that can be used as a shul. I like your idea in principle, but it’s hard to implement.

  5. Zechaya1—just a thought indeed but I don’t think most frum nyers would be able to endure having to say “good shabbos” to complete strangers and have that considered normal behavior. Furthermore, not having a main street with 7 kosher pizza places would be a major barrier to most nyers.

  6. Staten Island has lots of upsides that you don’t have elsewhere. For example for a person working in the city it’s a great place to live due to its proximity, you do not have that in monsey or Lakewood etc, also you have all the BP schools that you can send your children or stay in the same school that you send your child currently. Neighborhood is safe and gorgeous, A beautiful shtiebel opened up in manor heights besides for rabbi pollack a shul that has multiple minyoonim for chasidim, nothing is a complete solution but it’s 50% cheaper than BP on average for what you get with your money, for 800K you get a mansion in BP for 800K you get a condo with 1200SQ. So M if you want to move to Warwick then fine start a Yishuv there! But Staten Island is booming away and it’s a great idea for middle class working people.
