Since the opening of swim season in Israel this year, as of Sunday night the eve of 18 Menachem Av, there have been R”L 43 drowning deaths in pools and beaches around Israel.
According to Magen David Adom officials, this is about 50% more than average since there are usually about 30 drowning deaths annually. On Sunday night an 88-year-old male died as he drowned at the Bat Galim Beach in Haifa. He lifeless body was located and taken out of the water.
MDA reports the season began on May 9, 2016 and since that date there have been 255 drowning calls of which 43 involved fatalities. Eight of the victims were listed in critical condition, ten serious, twenty-one moderate and 173 light. At least thirteen cases involved children and teens up to the age of 18.
According to MDA 142 cases were in the Mediterranean, 12 the Dead Sea, 4 Eilat, 4 in the Kinneret, 27 in public pools, 11 in private pools, and 2 others in natural bodies of water.
