Calmer Night Follows Unrest in Milwaukee Neighborhood

m01Residents in a Milwaukee neighborhood marred by violence and destruction in the wake of a police shooting are waking up after a much calmer night.

The Sherman Park neighborhood erupted in chaos Saturday night after a black suspect was fatally shot by a black Milwaukee police officer. Businesses burned, gunshots rang out and police in riot gear were pelted with rocks and other objects. The violence continued, to a lesser degree, on Sunday night.

Officials promised strict enforcement of a 10 p.m. curfew for teens Monday night and closed Sherman Park at 6 p.m.

Police Chief Edward Flynn says there were some confrontations and six people were arrested Monday night, but that the neighborhood was relatively calm compared to the weekend.

  1. Please include reports about how the nearby Kehilla is faring in all this. All of us should be davening hard for them. When I was in Milwaukee a few years ago I noticed that the west side kehilla shared the neighborhood with what seemed like very decent middle class Afro Americans, but they’re not far from a different kind of neighborhood where the riots have been happening. Please keep us posted.

  2. dear Por, yes we are all safe Baruch Hashem the governor called the National Guard for the neighborhood, and between the state police, the Milwaukee Police, and the sheriff- who is wonderful, we had little incident. The police will be out in force again tonight, and enforcing a 10 o’clock curfew.
