Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is delaying the transfer of authority over Shabbos matters to Minister of the Interior Aryeh Deri. In order to hand over this authority, the Prime Minister, the Knesset will have to be convened and approve the move. In the interim, the committee that has been dealing with these matters to date will continue doing so. This will place the decision-making regarding many matters connected to kedushas Shabbos in Deri’s hands, a move that seems to have Mr. Netanyahu debating with himself, hence the delay.
Should Mr. Netanyahu decide against the expected move, he will undoubtedly elicit a response from his chareidi coalition partners.
Kikar Shabbos reports when asked to respond, Deri stated “there will be no compromise regarding matters pertaining to Shabbos”.

One Response
Netanyahu fears Israel will become too religious if the authority of Shabbos will be headed by Deri and prefers to give it to a secular minister, like Elazar Stern or Yaakov Perry.
