High Court Orders Appointment Of Female Deputy Director-General Of The State’s Batei Din

1The High Court of Justice has decided a female should be appointed as deputy director-general of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel Batei Din. The court ruled in a petition filed by a number of women’s rights organizations. During the court’s deliberation on the matter, Ministry of Religious Services Director-General Oded Flus offered to appoint a female deputy director-general and have the case withdrawn, but this did not occur.

The three justices headed by court Vice President Justice Elyakim Rubinstein ordered the appointment of a woman to the position.

Officials in the batei din network are angered over the decision, which they view as continued unwanted and harmful High Court intervention in the nation’s rabbinical courts system.

  1. Is “state” “Beis din” a contradiction in terms. If it is part of the secular government bureaucracy, how can it also be a Jewish court based on Torah?

  2. This is just wrong in principle whether you are talking about the Batei Din or the Water Commission. The best qualified person should be appointed to the job whether male or female.
