A man was critically injured Sunday morning in an explosion in Central Park near Fifth Avenue and East 62nd Street, and a section of the park has been closed.
EMS confirms at 10:53 a.m, that they received a call of a major injury at that location.
Eyewitnesses say the victim was walking with a friend when he stepped on something and it blew up. Neither of the two was carrying anything at the time.
There is a heavy police presence at the scene. The bomb squad has also been called in.
Authorities are closing off part of Central Park as they try to determine what caused the explosion.

Appears to be firework mishap
There is an orthodox synagogue less than 1/2 block away. I hope this was indeed a fireworks mishap and not a terrorist incident.
