Sen. Schumer: Phone Companies Should Offer Robocall Blocking

droidSen. Charles Schumer is introducing legislation that would require phone companies to offer a free service that would block robocalls from bill collectors, politicians and other sources.

The New York Democrat said Sunday that the legislation would require both mobile and landline service providers to offer the blocking technology.

A companion bill was introduced in the House of Representatives by Rep. Jackie Speier, a California Democrat.

Schumer says robocalls are technologically identifiable and that the blocking services work much like email spam filters. Some phone companies already offer the service.

According to statistics from voicemail provider YouMail Inc., there were nearly 50 million robocalls made to two New York City area codes in April. The company tallies which cities send and receive the most robocalls.

  1. From our do-nothing senator, this is par for the course. There is already legislation for a do not call list. It is so full of holes, that I question the sanity of anyone who voted to pass it. That piece was done to deceive the voters that their representatives were accomplishing something, which was a lie. Everyone I know still gets the telemarketers, with any of many excuses. Non-profits are a major pest. Various affiliations allow customer lists to be used. So we’re screwed anyway.

All I need is a code that appears on my caller ID that denotes a robocall. Then I leave it alone. The fine for not using it should be no less than $100 for each call. It will stop quickly.

Reality is, Schumer, in particular, who avoids anything except singing the Obama tune, has accomplished nothing since being allowed into office. So we get another piece of useless legislation to fool us again. This is pathetic.
