HaGaon HaRav Fischer: Girls Over 5 May Not Ride Bicycles Due To ‘Tzniyus’

1The rav of the Knesses neighborhoods of Nachlaot and member of the Beis Din of the Badatz Eida Chareidi HaGaon HaRav Eliezer Moshe Fischer Shlita has posted a kol korei to the community prohibiting girls over the age of five to ride a bicycle, citing reasons of tznius.

The letter signed by the rav was posted in Knesses Aleph, Beis and Gimmel, near his shul, Kehillas Yaakov, known more commonly as Batei Broida.

  1. This comment doesn’t make sense… maybe you meant to write unacceptable?

Anyway, I think this is a big joke, there’s nothing not tznius about a 6 year old girl riding a bike. Maybe we should make them wear burkas once we’re at it. Better yet, let’s just convert to Islam, they seem to be much better about this stuff than Jewish people…

  2. Not clear what his problem is? There are several bike shops in Willy and BP run by heimeshe yidden that have been around for a number of years. As long as a girl or woman is properly dressed, there is no reason why she shouldn’t be riding a bike to run errands or just for physical activity (does the Rav believe that the instruction of “ushamartem es nafshosechem” doesn’t apply to women??). Maybe the rav had some bad experiences with hipster riding bikes in skimpy outfits while visiting New York or in some neighborhoods of Tel Aviv. But women can wear long sleeve shirts/pullovers and be totally tziniusdik.

  3. It would be helpful to show the letter that is talked about. Interestingly, the letter is dated from SEVEN YEARS AGO.

  4. In the shomrei Torah u’mitzvos European communities of Antwerp and Amsterdam girls ride bicycles as do married women. Still it is good to know that kanaous is alive and well in Eretz Yisroel.

  5. You show an image of a boy’s bicycle in the article rather than of a girl’s. A girl’s bicycle is more tznius; that’s why it’s made differently. I wonder if the Rav was aware of this?

  6. Women and girls riding bikes has long been considered immodest ,this isn’t new. Why is this being reported on a frum website? It just gives the Hellenists ,who can’t understand the value of modesty and refinement, a chance to express their narrow-minded condemnation.

  7. There goes her arrogance Ms. Pompedora again! The bicycle shops in Willy and Boro Park cater by and large to boys, men and young girls. You have some chutzpah to prattle on as if you are an equal to a Rav and Posek. Stop it already! You never learned Shas or Shulchan Aruch. You have absolutely no business commenting on Halachic issues. Your posting name “gadolhadorah” which not only is grammatically incorrect is indicative of your grandiose, pompous and bombastic ego. It’s high time you cease and desist from spouting abd displaying your ignorance in public.
