A year and a half ago, on the third Yahrzeit of Rebbetzin Batsheva Kanievsky, a new movement for women was formed in her memory; Ner Echad. The concept was to create a way to carry on her holy work – her love and acceptance of all Jewish women, and her distinguished charity work with widows and orphans. Today, Ner Echad is a fast growing movement with members from every corner of the globe and from every background and lifestyle. These women unite each week through a simple but sophisticated system that allows them to connect in the special Mitzvos of prayer, candle lighting, and charity. Recently, Ner Echad members from all over the world sent in video clips expressing how they feel about Ner Echad, which were then edited together to create their new four minute video: “Ner Echad Speaks for Itself”.
In this video, members tell us how easy and simple the Ner Echad system is. Every member receives a customized notification on Fridays providing them with their local candle lighting time, and the name of a fellow member who they should keep in their tefilos that week. Members discuss how comforting it is to know that another Jewish woman somewhere in the world is praying for them at that special moment, while davening for another member’s individual needs makes them feel so connected. Each member also donates one dollar each week through the Ner Echad automated system to the Batsheva Kanievsky Widow and Children Fund. Members tell us how all the dollars are collected at the exact same moment- joining these women together in a massive weekly global donation. Other members express their great satisfaction knowing that their candle-lighting dollar goes to such a worthy cause, and the convenience of it happening automatically so they need not worry about forgetting it on a busy Erev Shabbos.
“It only takes a minute to sign up” says Ner Echad member, Tova from Far Rockaway. “…and I’ve been benefiting ever since”, continues Reyna from Boston MA. On the video you see and hear women from Hungary, South Africa, Brazil, Israel, and across North America, all expressing the same sentiments in one unified voice – that Ner Echad is a wonderful and easy way to feel connected and bring more unity to the Jewish nation. No matter your background, or where you are from, we can all welcome Shabbos together- while helping to carry on the work of one of the greatest women of our generation, Rebbetzin Batsheva Kanievsky, a”h.
