High Ranking NYPD Commander Commits Suicide


ameryA high-ranking commander with the NYPD has committed suicide.

Inspector Michael Ameri’s body was found in his car in West Babylon Friday, according to police. The 44-year-old had shot himself.

Inspector Michael Ameri, Commanding Officer of the prestigious NYPD Highway District was a well-liked rising star in the department.

Ameri previously was the Commanding Officer Brooklyn’s 78th Precinct, the Commanding Officer of the Queens Vice Enforcement Division of the Organized Crime Control Bureau, which focuses on prostitution, gambling, untaxed cigarettes and licenses and premises; and also served as the Commanding Officer of the Brooklyn North Narcotics Module.

Ameri was born in Ozone Park, Queens, raised on Long Island and was living in Astoria for five years before recently moving back to the Island.

Ameri was assigned to Highway in July of 2014, where he served the city until his tragic death.

He was responsible for many motorcades including visits by the President, and most recently the Pope.

Ameri was questioned as part of the of the NYPD, although he was never disciplined or publicly linked to that investigation.
