Respect For Some Of The Bereaved Families Leads To Dispute On Tel Aviv University Campus

imdThe decision was made not to invite a female vocalist to perform at a Memorial Day service at Tel Aviv University out of respect and consideration for some of the bereaved families, the frum community. The ceremony is scheduled to take place on Tuesday evening the eve of 3 Iyar.

According to the Channel 10 News report, the university’s student union has withdrawn its backing for the event in response to the decision. A similar dispute took place on the campus of Bar Ilan University as it canceled a performance by a female vocalist to avoid offending religious people attending a Holocaust Remembrance Day memorial.

University officials explain that while the event is hosted on campus it is not a university sponsored event, making a point of adding the university does not exclude women and views such a phenomenon most seriously.

  1. If they’re so concerned about women’s rights and equality, etc. then let them make a female-only event that has women singing there. Then, they can honor two vocalists, a male for the men and a female for the women.

  2. Tel Aviv University is in Tel Aviv, a secular university.
Bar Ilan University is a religious university in Ramat Gan, in the Tel Aviv-Ramat Gan area.
Your column should have stated this more clearly since the article was refering to Bar Ilan University.
