The White House was on lockdown Wednesday morning after a man threw personal belongings over the north fence, according to the U.S. Secret Service.
Uniformed members of the Secret Service arrested the man, said Robert K. Hoback, an agency spokesman. The man’s name was not immediately released pending filing of charges.
The incident occurred about 10:30 a.m. and the lockdown continued past noon. “Protective sweeps of the North grounds are ongoing,” Hoback said in a statement. “Once complete, the White House Complex will return to normal operations.”
The incident comes one day after a man who police said had committed a series of robberies and sexual assaults on pedestrians in downtown Washington jumped the fence at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, adjacent to the White House, in an attempt to escape.
That man was arrested and is expected to appear in D.C. Superior Court on Wednesday afternoon.
