Yishai Schlisel, who was facing charges of murder and numerous attempted murders for the murder of Shira Banki at the Gay Parade in Yerushalayim was convicted by the Jerusalem District Court on Tuesday, 11 Nissan.
Schlisel was evaluated to determine if he is fit to stand trial and the determination was made that he is indeed aware of his actions and therefore, he would stand trial.
Banki, who ironically was not participating in the parade was the only fatality. She died of her stab wounds inflicted by Schlisel on August 2, 2015.
The verdict included on count of murder, six counts of attempted murder and aggravated assault. Justice Nava Ben-Ohr did not spare words in her scathing criticism of police, who she stated failed miserably in their assignment to stop Schlisel. She stated the fact that he entered the sterile zone around the parade despite the fact his photo was distributed to police in advance was “incomprehensible”, admonishing the department for its role, the failure to detect and stop Schlisel in time.
Sentencing will take place at a later date.
