Israel Police Preparing for Yomtov Including Birchas Kohanim


sukPolice are busy preparing for Pesach which includes the large influx of visitors to the capital as well as Birchas Kohanim. In addition, the Christian community will observe Ester at the same time culminating with a ceremony in the Church of the Sepulcher on April 30th.

Police and Israel Police units will be deployed throughout the city with an emphasis on crowded public areas and shopping centers as well as in and around the Old City.

Troops will be focusing on busy shopping areas in the coming days before yomtov. They will also direct traffic during chol hamoed. During chol hamoed, from 7:00 to 20:00 the following street closures will apply in Yerushalayim.

· Derech Chevron from Marim HaChamonait to the Old City

· Route 1 from National Police HQ towards the Old City

· Agron Street towards Mamilla

· Chativat Yerushalayim in both directions

· The Old City will be closed to all private vehicles with the exception of those with permits. Drivers with handicapped tags will be directed to Shar Tzion from Derech Chevron/David Remez.

There will be a free park & ride from Pisgat Ze’ev, Ammunition Hill and Mount Herzl. The light rail will be operating at maximum capacity.

Birchas Kohanim will be held on the second day chol hamoed.

Drivers are urged to distance themselves from the Old City any rely on park & rides and public transportation.

The official statement adds “Israel Police will operate a masterful balance to permit all three faiths to pray and exercise freedom of religion and worship along with protection of personal safety and security and the department expects the public debate on issues will be characterized by tolerance and mutual respect during the holiday period. We urge all residents to be patient and follow instructions of police officers”.
