HaGaon HaRav Tzion Boaron rules that one should not use lettuce grown in controlled condition because of the high quantity of pesticides used in the process. The rav’s psak comes ahead of Pesach when everyone will be buying greens for maror, permitting buying regular lettuce to avoid the dangers of the so-called gush katif lettuce.
Rav Baron, a prominent Sephardi posek, writes the following psak ahead of yomtov, concerned with people eating gush katif greens and the illness that might result from the excessive use of pesticides.
Following is a portion of the psak halacha.
“בענין בדיקת הירק מן התולעים והחרקים אשר העלנו בכוחא דהיתרא שלא להזדקק לירקות המטופלים בחממות מיוחדות למניעת היווצרות התולעים והחרקים, אלא להשתמש בירקות הנמכרים בשוק ללא הטיפול המיוחד.
“וכל זאת לאחר שנודע מפי מומחים הבקיאים בעניני החיטוי וההדברה שהירקות הנ”ל מטופלים בכמות ריסוס גדולה בהרבה מן הכמות שהותרה ע”י משרדי הבריאות והחקלאות ואשר הדבר מהווה סכנה גדולה ומוחשית לציבור”.

Can an authorized spokesperson for Gush Katif confirm or deny that pesticides are used?
As it is said that the amount of pesticide used is far in excess of that permitted by both the Israeli Ministries of Health and Agriculture, it would also be interesting to hear what they have to say. This is not just an issue for Pesach but year round. YWN, please have your Israel Desk be proactive in this.
Unless hes a Dr i dont see his place giving a psak on a medical matter
