Deputy Minister of Education Meir Porush wishes to establish a council to oversee chareidi education in the ministry to replace the controversial Chareidi Unit, but Education Minister Naftali Bennett insists he will not permit this to occur.
Mako News reported on Tuesday night the eve of 20 Adar-II that Porush has been working in recent weeks to create this new council in the hope of circumventing the Chareidi Unit which is the source of a great deal of friction between the ministry and chareidi schools recognized by the state system. It is pointed out the current Chareidi Unit was established in the last administration by then Education Minister Shai Piron.
Opponents to Porush’s plan feel he is trying to send chareidi education back years as well as isolating the chareidi schools from the system. Mako quotes sources in the ministry explaining if Porush succeeds, he will bring an end to the integration of chareidim into Israeli society.
