Uman became known on the world map when Rebbe Nachman ztz”l decided to take up residence in this quaint Ukrainian town. For years, the Rebbe has been encouraging his followers to be with him during three special times: Rosh Hashanah, Shabbat of Chanukah, and Rosh Chodesh Nissan, the birthday of the Rebbe.

For over 200 years, visitors to Uman have braved severe challenges, including poor accommodations and having travel completely banned after the Bolshevik Revolution. From the mid-1930’s until after World War II, only a handful of followers were granted entrance to be at Rebbe Nachman’s grave in Uman. This number dwindled down to a mere 11 people in 1948 and averaged between 9 and 13 people annually until the 1970’s.

Fast forward to the turn of the century. In 2000, the number of gatherers at Uman on Rosh Hashanah reached the 10,000 mark. The last Rosh Hashanah gathering had Uman nearly bursting at the seams with approximately 40,000 travellers from around the world!

Along with the dramatic rise in tourism has come the dramatic improvement in accommodations. Uman is now a comfortable, family-friendly vacation destination for all those seeking an inspiring spiritual experience. There are several cozy inns to choose from, outfitted with American-style beds, en-suite bathrooms, kitchenettes, private mikveh, and delicious glatt-kosher in-house meal service.

Uman Inn is a wonderful destination choice for larger groups. It features rooms that accommodate up to 4 people each, plus private bathrooms and kitchen. Uman Suites is composed of two upscale private suites, which are suitable for couples and small families.

They include a spacious living room, dining area, en-suite bathroom, and have in-house meal service available. Visitors to Uman Suites also have access to the private mikveh, which is located at Uman Inn, a 5-second walk from the Suites. All lodging is also equipped with 24-hour security.

Travel between the airport at Kiev and Uman can be arranged with private, affordable, and reliable car service. Public bus transportation is also available throughout the day, and is comfortable and efficient.

Private tours to kivrei tzaddikim such as Rebbe Natan, the Baal Shem Tov, and Rebbe Elimelech of Lizhensk, are easily arranged.

Rosh Chodesh Nissan is a wonderful time of year to visit Uman. Prices for accommodations are on average 25% of the prices during Rosh Hashanah. It is a great opportunity for those who want to bring their children as well, as Uman is not crowded. Rebbe Nachman advised parents to bring their children to his kever before they reach the age of seven years old, as a way to help them maintain their purity until marriage. He also advised people to come to his kever, give a coin to charity, and say his famous Tikkun Klali. If one does so, he promises to go to the ends of the universe to ensure a favorable judgment for them in Heaven.
