The Ministerial Law Committee on Sunday, 17 Adar-II approved a bill that would give municipal inspectors limited authority to enforce certain traffic safety laws – those laws that address the safety of pedestrians.
Minister of Public Security Gilad Erdan stated “Steps are intended for pedestrians and they must feel safe on them. Unfortunately, stairs have often become dangerous for people due to the irresponsible actions of some.
The municipal inspectors will join police in enforcing some of the traffic laws including a bicycle or an electric bicycle on stairs and other laws pertaining to endangering pedestrians. They will be permitted to detain a suspect until police arrive, issue summonses, and let the air out of a vehicle’s tires and impound a vehicle. They will also be permitted to issue summonses to pedestrians walking in bicycle lanes.
