VIDEO AND PHOTOS: Hazmat Situation South of Dimona Due to Train Derailment

At about 22:05 on Monday night the eve of 5 Adar-II, a freight train hit a number of cars that were on the track six kilometers south of Dimona. A total of four people, including two train drivers sustained light injuries. Police early Tuesday morning declared the hazardous materials incident under control, adding the accident would not have an impact on Dimona area train service during the morning rush hour.

As a result of the impact three frights cars derailed and a tank of bromine fell. Field tests confirmed a slight leak from the bromine tank. Police and other agencies were alerted and a hazardous materials incident was declared.

Police assumed control of the scene with experts from the Environmental Protection Ministry. Fire department personnel were responsible for clearing the bromine from the area, working during the night.

At about 23:00 police instructed residents living a kilometer or less from the accident site to remain indoors and close windows. The expects stressed the leak was extremely small but all appropriate cautions were taken nonetheless.

Israel Railways officials moved in after the bromine threat was eliminated and began the work of clearing the wreckage.

Soroka Hospital officials reported on Tuesday morning a total of seven people were treated for light symptoms including burning sensation and vomiting. Four were released by morning and the others remain for observation.
