Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon last week called on IDF commanders and hesder yeshivot to boycott Rabbi Eliezer Melamed Shlita, mora d’asra of Yishuv Har Bracha as well as rosh yeshiva.
Ya’alon called for the boycott against Rabbi Melamed for he feels the rav’s hashkafa regarding IDF service is “too extreme”. Ya’alon and IDF officials have banned any IDF cooperation with Rabbi Melamed whatsoever.
The reason for the ban is that Rabbi Melamed has spoken out in the past calling for refusing orders when such orders are in violation of halacha.
In 2009, Defense Minister Ehud Barak ousted the Har Bracha Hesder Yeshiva from the hesder network after the rav refused to retract remarks calling on his soldiers to refuse orders that contradict halacha. Rabbi Melamed has since continued his yeshiva, albeit outside of the hesder framework.
Some rabbonim called Ya’alon’s decision “scandalous”, even dati leumi rabbonim who disagree with Rabbi Melamed’s hashkafa. They explain that Ya’alon’s position to boycott Rabbi Melamed is unacceptable in a democratic society.

And this is relevant to the yeshiva world (“Yeshiva World News” anyone?) because??? Even without the DM’s proclamation, Rabbi Melamed has zero standing in the chareidi world in E.Y. and its yeshivas.
Moderators Note: Small minded people like yourself don’t understand that this is a big world. Perhaps, just maybe there actually are tens of thousands of people who read YWN every day who are not of your ilk? Or perhaps people actually like to be informed of the major news of the day? We know….That is too much for you to grasp at one time. It should sink in…..Nah….probably won’t.
This is shmad in the classic sense, Rabbi Melamed should ban all Yidden from serving in the treif army. #1, this is very relevant to us Yidden with a mesora when others (serving in the Hellenist army under “Hesder” auspices) seek to corrupt the mesora.
To the Moderator: (don’t know if this’ll get published). Your abrasive note is entirely uncalled-for. “Of your ilk?” What ilk is that? You mean a chareidi, yeshivishe person who thought he’s looking at a chareidi web site that reports, as its name suggests, news about the yeshiva world? It would appear either that I am mistaken, or the name of this website is.
“People actually like to be informed of the major news of the day.” While true, yet YWN does not report every “major news” item. Murders, stabbings, sexual assaults, to name a few, are not reported. So, you are already exercising a certain degree of “filtering” (censorship) — just like all chareeidi newspapers and websites have to do. And very righly so!! I was simply wondering why a rabbi and a yeshiva that have no influence or authority in the chareidi world here in E.Y. need to be reported to the chareidi readership. You block other things; why was this considered so important? If the original posting wasn’t “correct” why did you publish it in the first place?
Mr American Yerushalmi– there are those among us probably 20 to 30 years your senior that occasionally check out sefarim written by Rav Melamid, Rav Amital, Rav Kook
