NYPD Ramps Up Efforts to Support ‘Vision Zero’

nypdThe police department is ramping up efforts to support Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Vision Zero initiative.

Police Commissioner Bill Bratton detailed the department’s plans Thursday at a conference with traffic safety advocates and experts.

The goal of Vision Zero is to bring traffic fatalities to zero by 2024.

Bratton said the police department is putting more resources towards its highway division.

“The department is putting more personnel into it,” he said. “I have almost 100 more highway patrol officers, increased numbers of investigators to investigate serious injury and death accidents, and as I just referenced, we’ll be in budget discussion with the City Council to hopefully hire an additional 400-500 additional traffic agents to increase that focus on continuing the movement toward the Vision Zero goal.”

There have been 38 traffic-related deaths so far this year, five more than the same period last year.
