Top Republican Unveils $98B in Cuts to Social Programs


senA senior House Republican is seeking to cut child tax credits for immigrants working in the U.S. illegally.

Powerful Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady also wants tougher rules to reclaim overpayments of health insurance tax subsidies under the new health care law.

The move by is part of an effort to help GOP leaders make progress in passing the House’s annual budget blueprint.

The spending cuts are designed to move in tandem with the GOP budget plan to ease tea party opposition to the broader measure.

The budget plan would endorse last year’s bipartisan budget and debt deal, which increased spending for annual agency budgets.

The Texas Republican would eliminate the Social Services Block Grant, which provides flexible grants to states for services to the poor.
