Councilman Chaim Deutsch (D – BROOKLYN) is hosting a series of free income tax preparation events throughout March and April. These services will be provided on Sunday afternoons, with the next available date on Sunday, March 13th. Councilman Deutsch’s first free tax preparation event was held last week, and attracted local residents, who took advantage of the convenient time and location.
In partnership with Grow Brooklyn Inc. and the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs, these events will be held at Councilman Deutsch’s District Office, at 2401 Avenue U. Any resident whose income is less than $54,000 annually is eligible for this free tax prep. IRS certified volunteers work with the participant to prepare their tax returns for submission. Under the leadership of DCA Acting Commissioner Alba Pico, last year’s citywide effort to provide free tax prep resulted in more than 150,000 free returns filed, and over $250 million in tax refunds to New Yorkers who utilized the service.
“I am pleased to partner with Acting Commissioner Pico and Grow Brooklyn to provide this much-needed service to my constituents,” said Councilman Chaim Deutsch. “Often, tax preparers can charge clients hundreds of dollars, money that could otherwise be utilized to pay rent, put food on the table, and care for our families. The volunteers that staff these events are professional, efficient, and caring individuals, and I encourage all qualifying constituents to call my office and schedule an appointment.”
“Last year we helped New Yorkers file more than 150,000 returns for free but there are many more New Yorkers who are eligible but continue to pay to do their taxes,” said Department of Consumer Affairs First Deputy Commissioner Alba Pico. “We thank Councilman Deutsch and Grow Brooklyn for helping extend this trusted and professional service to even more New Yorkers so they get the full refund they deserve and save for their future.”
“Grow Brooklyn is very enthusiastic to partner with the Councilmember’s office on tax preparation,” said Grow Brooklyn representatives. “During tax season, so many of families have the opportunity to make strides towards their future economic security by utilizing the available tax credits. The income tax refund is often the single largest financial boost that low- to middle-income families receive in a year. We’re happy that Councilmember Deutsch and the DCA have recognized the significant positive effect the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program has, and we, at Grow Brooklyn, fully appreciate that they have lent us tremendous support in helping Brooklynites keep their whole refund. VITA tax prep is reliable, professional, and free. We hope Councilmember Deutsch’s endorsement encourages his colleagues in the New York City Council to follow suit, and partner with Grow Brooklyn to provide free tax preparation in their communities as well. The more partners we have — especially ones like the Councilmember who can spread the word to hundreds of people — the more community members we can help.”
To schedule an appointment with Councilman Deutsch’s free income tax prep volunteers, call his District Office at 718-368-9176 or email Councilman Deutsch at [email protected]. Residents utilizing this service should bring with them the following documents: a government issued photo ID, a social security card or ITIN for anyone claimed on the return, all tax forms received (W-2s, 1099-R, etc.), any college bills paid, and bank account information for those receiving direct deposit.
