NYC Subway Riders Push Governor Cuomo For Transit Funds

subNew York City subway and bus riders are telling Gov. Andrew Cuomo to make good on a promise to invest billions in the city’s aging transit system.

Members of the Riders Alliance gathered at the state Capitol in Albany Monday to encourage Cuomo and top lawmakers to include up to $1.8 billion for transit upgrades in this year’s state budget.

Cuomo has vowed to spend $8.3 billion on the Metropolitan Transit Authority’s $29 billion modernization plan — but transit advocates say details are lacking.

The state has already given $1 billion. Cuomo says the rest will be allocated when the MTA needs the money.

Rider Michelle Alexander of Queens says funding details are needed now to ensure plans for new subway cars and buses, better signaling and modern stations can proceed.
