Syria Hit By Nationwide Power Outage

powerA nationwide power cut gripped Syria on Thursday, state media reported, amid a partial cease-fire brokered by world powers.

The official Syrian Arab News Agency, citing an electricity ministry official, reported a blackout that covered “all provinces” of the war-torn country. The report did not specify a reason for the power cut, and said efforts were underway to repair the network.

Power outages are common occurrences in Syria, and have been caused by attacks from rebel groups opposing the government of President Bashar Assad.

Fighting has decreased significantly since the cease-fire took effect Saturday, monitored by nations including the United States and Russia.
